Week Five & Six - February 24th, 2025
Last Monday, I did a test print of the butterfly clip and definitely discovered a lot. I guess there's a reason for test prints, right? The print went smoothly, although it took a really long time. The problem came when I removed the print and had to remove the support material. Long story short - I couldn't. There was absolutely no way to remove the material between the wings without cracking the structure.
Small snippet of me struggling with this print ^^
I went to talk to Peter and he made a few recommendations. Because my plan is to have the final butterfly clip be resin printed, there are a few things that I have to take in to consideration. The resin printer prints an absolute minimum of about a millimetre, so he recommended that I make the wings thicker to avoid any possible breakage or printing issues. He also mentioned that removing the support material from a resin print can be pretty tough, so having less support material would be ideal. Because of this, I've opted for the removable wing option.
There were a couple other issues with the test print, both with the connecting pieces. Firstly, the hole for the metal rod was not wide enough. Second, there was not enough space between the four connector pieces to fit the spring mechanism in between.
For the removable wing, I just created an empty space that hopefully the wing can slide into, of course anticipating some clearance that the wing could print a bit bigger (if this doesn't work, maybe I'll try a hinge? similar to the clip mechanism). Now I will print the wings separately from the clip to avoid the whole support material issue. I also troubleshooted some of the issues with the mechanism.
I have booked printers for Monday to do a second test print, and the laser cutter to test out the fit of the acrylic on Tuesday. Hopefully after this, I can solve the final issues and send it to the resin printer. Initially, I was planning to do a photoshoot with the final clip before the due date, but I think at this point, I might run out of time. I'll think about it throughout the week and see. If I don't get a chance before the project is due, definitely something to consider before semester end.
