Week Two - January 27th, 2025
I started modelling my hair clip this week! Keep in mind this model is rough and far from final, this was sort of just my way of figuring out techniques that could work or spotting factors that need trouble shooting so that I can finalize my design and dimensions!
While I was presenting my idea last week, a couple things were suggested that I could implement: using coloured laser cut acrylic to fill in the structure of the wings and making the wings removable.
Wings: I started with the wings. I really like the idea of adding colours into this, however, I always wanted the wings to have a bit of movement, which would sort of restrict that as a possibility. **definitely have to ensure that the lines are an appropriate width so they will be able to be 3-D printed.**
Claws: each tooth is 0.2in with 0.2in of spacing. for the claws to actually fit together, they need to be more triangular and get thinner at the ends. The claw still requires quite a bit of workshopping as I haven't quite settled on the shape of the claw itself, but I do know that I want the smaller butterfly wings to be right at the top, not this half circle.
Some things I've learned from doing this preliminary model:
- fillet the edges of every shape, do not want sharp corners in a hair piece.
- shape of the claw clip itself: currently it's more of a half circle with claws but I think that looks a bit awkward with the second wing further down the shaft. could do more of an hourglass type shape that would directly fit the wings.
- if I decide I want the wings to be detachable, there needs to be a wide enough section on the claw that something can slide into (this requires testing)
- been using the flow tool for the claw itself but there might be a better, more accurate way to do this.
- teeth need to be thinner so they fit together
I was also able to find a kit for the spring mechanism that comes in silver and gold (which could also add to the custom made aspect, as I prefer silver jewelry). Claw Clip Spring Replacement. The next thing to figure out mechanism wise is the best way to affix the ends of the spring to the claws. If I were to continue with the sort of skeleton-y wing idea, it might be difficult to attach the ends of the spring (could possibly have the top set of wings solid and the bottom ones more open)?
I would like to hopefully finish modelling the object this week and do a few test prints next week to see what material is going to be the best.
