Week Three

The Bespoke Object

Progress Blog
Week Three - February 3rd, 2025

A bit of a less eventful blog post this week, I ended up having a ton of commitments and my plans of completing the model this week sort of fell through. Every time I sat down to work on the model this week, I ran into issues. Sort of back to the drawing board a little bit this week.

Claw Clip Analysis:
I deconstructed a claw clip this week to look at the mechanism and the flow of the claw clip. I thought I would have to glue the spring onto the claw pieces, but the ends of the spiring actually just fall into a small indent to keep the tension. Something that I also need to do this week is re-measure the dimensions of the clip. I think maybe part of the reason I am having trouble is because the dimensions aren't exact.

Claw: I have used Rhino before but I am still far from an expert and I am having trouble with the shape of the claw itself, so I think before continuing, I need a bit of guidance on the best way to proceed so that the model looks the bet and most true to form. I thought that designing the claw as one piece, then extruding it and using the flow tool would be the best way to create the claw shape, but I don't think so anymore. I tried the flow command so many times, but was unable to get the right form. When I finally found a line that worked for the flow, when I mirrored the object for the other side, it wasn't equal. I also tried to use cage edit, but then it was warping the dimensions of the extrusion, and I don't want that to happen. Maybe it would be easier to create each part separately and then connect them? I'm not sure.

Couple things to change:
- the teeth need to be longer
- fillet all corners
- add little teeth inside the bigger teeth for grip

Wings: I have decided that I will keep the wings flat to allow for the possibility of a stained glass-type look between the skeleton of the wings.  **definitely still have to ensure that the lines are an appropriate width so they will be able to be 3-D printed and fit the width of the laser cut acrylic.**

I did find some acrylic that I think would be really cool to use and really has the butterfly vibe: Iridescent Translucent Plexiglass

Some setbacks this week, but ideally, this is my schedule going forward:

Monday, February 10th:
digital model complete

Monday, February 10th-Friday, February 14th:
test print

February 15th-23rd:
reading week (I will likely be out of town this week so would be great to have a test print so I can make any adjustments digitally this week before sending it to be resin printed)

Monday, February 24th-Friday, February 28th:
final resin print with laser cut acrylic, construction

Monday, March 3rd:
due date
