Final Object

Image
The Bespoke Object Progress Blog  April 9th, 2025 Unfortunately sort of a disappointing final update on my object. I am really unhappy with how this turned out. After removing the support material yesterday and curing the resin, I started sanding, and in that process, one side of the claw snapped in two. I was able to superglue it back together (but the superglue actually somehow ended up in my hair? I literally had to cut like two inches of hair because the actual bottle of superglue somehow wound up in my hair. I wish I was kidding). Then I opted for glossy black spray paint, which developed bubbles overnight as it dried, so now it doesn't really look very polished. I think I should have gone for matte paint. I noticed here that the removable wings don't fit into the slots securely either like they previously did in my FDM tests. Then, I went to pop in the iridescent acrylic, and just my luck, it doesn't fit. After 6 laser cut tests, it doesn't fit. So really all of...

Progress Blog - April 7th

Image
The Bespoke Object Progress Blog  April 7th, 2025 So, I didn't post last week because I haven't really had any big updates, but here's a run down on what I've been up to the past two weeks. We are at the resin printing stage in this process. I had one resin print done at the beginning of the week, but then I noticed something that I had to change so I had to send another file in, unfortunately. I made a small change right after my last FDM test before resin printing, which turned out to be a mistake. I increased the size of the little dots for my gallery to lock the acrylic into place, without accounting for the clearance that was needed for the size of the material. Of course, the intention was the have the butterfly clip completed and photographed before today, but due to the queue of people in front of me for resin printing, upon talking to Peter, the absolute earliest the print will be done (contingent on any failures that could occur) would be by mid-day on Monda...

Progress Post - March 23rd

The Bespoke Object Revisited Progress Blog  March 23rd, 2025 So, I haven't posted a blog post in a couple weeks because my updates are not all that exciting yet, but here's a run down on what I've been up to the past two weeks. First of all, I completed my FDM printed tests for my object. A couple issues were creating the gallery for the acrylic to sit in (the little dots to secure the material had to be larger) and the slot for the removable wing got too fragile and ended up snapping on both sides as I removed the support material.  I've spent the past few weeks workshopping the object for (hopefully) the last time.   I also worked on perfecting the dimensions of the acrylic and I finally cracked it. I did a few more tests with three different sizes and surprisingly the first one that was unaltered worked the best.  On Thursday, I sent the object to be resin printed and I'm not certain when it will be complete but I'm assuming by the end of the week. Fingers ...

The Bespoke Object Revisited

Image
The Bespoke Object Revisited Progress Blog  March 10th, 2025 I thought about the project two choice throughout the week. I do have an idea for the mass produced object, but I also have my object from project one that is still not quite up to my expectations. Basically what it comes down to is: At the end of the semester, would I rather have two sort of incomplete, rushed objects, or one refined one? So I'm going with the latter. Bespoke Object V2! So just as a reminder, this is where we're at right now:  Digital Model: Test Prints: I keep having issues with removing support material and then the object breaks, so I would like to try a few more adjustments to maybe avoid that issues. I was also recommended to try tree supports so that's maybe something to investigate? Some things I would like to change: make the dots on the inner gallery thing bigger so that acrylic material an lock in make clip less thick (just by a millimetre or two) adjust removable wing mechanism so wi...

Week Seven

Image
The Bespoke Object Progress Blog  Week Seven - March 3rd, 2025 Okay so, I know today is the due date for this project, but unfortunately, my object is not quite done. I had every intention of completing it this week but had a few setbacks.  First of all, for the laser cut pieces, I added a gallery to the bottom of each wing, so that the acrylic would stay and I wouldn't have to use glue. That was a relatively easy fix. The issues this week came with the printing. After adding the gallery and the little dots to the side of the skeleton, I found the support material even harder to remove than it has been. So much so that I completely broke one of my pieces, which is super disappointing.  My first laser cut trials ended up being too small, and then my laser cut appointment on Sunday was cancelled due to technical difficulties. So basically, I have the completed prints of both detachable wings, but only one side of the clip, so I have to do another print this week....

Week Five & Six

Image
The Bespoke Object Progress Blog  Week Five & Six - February 24th, 2025 Last Monday, I did a test print of the butterfly clip and definitely discovered a lot. I guess there's a reason for test prints, right? The print went smoothly, although it took a really long time. The problem came when I removed the print and had to remove the support material. Long story short - I couldn't. There was absolutely no way to remove the material between the wings without cracking the structure.  This is the test print after I spent literally three hours trying to remove the support material, this was as much as I could remove. Small snippet of me struggling with this print ^^ I went to talk to Peter and he made a few recommendations. Because my plan is to have the final butterfly clip be resin printed, there are a few things that I have to take in to consideration. The resin printer prints an absolute minimum of about a millimetre, so he recommended that I make the wings thicker to a...

Week Four

Image
The Bespoke Object Progress Blog  Week Three - February 10th, 2025 It's all coming together! The model of the butterfly clip is done! The first thing I did this week was re-measure to confirm my dimensions. The most time consuming part was finding the right shape for the claw piece and the correct angle for the teeth. In past weeks, I was trying to flow the whole surface of the claw around a curvy line and that really was not working, so I approached it from a bit of a different way. I decided I wasn't going to add a curve to the top wing at all so that I can keep it straight for the acrylic later.  Not curving that top portion also gave me a bit better of a flat surface for the little notches that the road and spring goes through.  Although I'm not quite ready for this step this week, I prepared the laser cutter file that I'll need for the wings. Up until  this point I had totally forgotten about the antennae and I think they just add another unique element. Okay,...
